How to Prepare for Your At-Home Newborn Session
Bringing your baby home is one of the most special seasons of life. It’s also one of the most overwhelming.
Between sleepless nights, feeding schedules, and learning all of your baby’s little cues, the last thing I want you worrying about is how to prepare for photos.
My at home newborn sessions are meant to feel relaxed and natural. Your only job is to cuddle your baby and soak up this time together. I’ll guide the rest.
Here are a few simple things that can help your session feel smooth and stress free.
Your House Doesn’t Need to Be Perfect
One of the biggest things parents worry about is whether their home is “photo ready.”
I promise you, it does not need to be perfectly tidy.
For newborn sessions I usually photograph in just a few areas of the home: the living room, the parents’ bedroom, and the nursery. A quick tidy in those spaces is more than enough. Clearing bedside tables, putting away extra blankets, or moving a few items off a dresser can make a big difference.
Your home is part of your story during this season. It doesn’t need to look like a magazine.
Natural Light Makes All the Difference
When I arrive, I’ll always look for the areas in your home with the most natural light. Soft window light is what makes in home newborn sessions feel bright, warm, and timeless. Opening blinds or curtains before I arrive can help a lot, but don’t worry if your home doesn’t have huge windows. I’ll always find the best light available and plan our photos around that.
Feeding Baby When I Arrive Helps a Lot
One little tip that can make sessions run extra smoothly is feeding your baby right when I arrive. A full baby is usually a sleepy and content baby, which helps us capture those cozy, snuggly moments everyone loves. Of course every baby is different, and we’ll always go at their pace.

Keep Outfits Simple
Two or three outfits usually work best for newborn sessions. Simple pieces photograph beautifully and help keep the focus on your baby. I always recommend including one outfit that leaves baby’s feet uncovered so we can capture those adorable tiny toes. Soft neutrals and cozy textures always work wonderfully, but the most important thing is that your baby is comfortable.
Go With the Flow
Newborn sessions are very relaxed and baby-led. Sometimes babies need extra feeds, diaper changes, or just a few minutes of cuddles. We’ll take breaks whenever needed and adjust our plans as we go. Some of the sweetest photos actually happen during those little pauses! There’s absolutely no pressure for anything to go perfectly, the goal is simply to capture this season as it really is.
These Moments Go By So Quickly
The newborn stage is incredibly special, but it also passes in the blink of an eye. These sessions are about preserving those moments so you can look back years from now and remember exactly what this time felt like. It’s truly one of my greatest joys to capture that for families.
